BIOPTIC DRIVERS

Ecosystem

In Australia, medical matters for licencing are governed by the national document "Assessing Fitness To Drive (AFTD) Guidelines". It is owned by states and territories through their roads and licencing regulations as well as the Australian government through the National Transport Commission who is the body that does the national review every 3-5 years and Austroads where you can download the latest version. The purpose of having the national AFTD Guidelines is to provide consistency across state and territory jurisdictions for medical assessments for driver licencing. This includes the role of the Driver Licence Authority (DLA) which has the final decision on each driver licence application. Where a person has disclosed a medical condition that is contained in the AFTD Guidelines the document is to give guidance to medical, health and rehabilitation professions on how to assess and make recommendations to the DLA to licence unconditionally, with conditions or not at all.

Bioptic driving has been referenced in the Guidelines since 2012 which means its been legally available since this time. See blog '18. Australian bioptic driving history and current status'. Blogs in this section provide various aspects around this ecosystem overtime.
