Professional Bioptic Training

These pages provide information about bioptic driving processes and practices for professionals involved in the ecosystem. Reading the Churchill Travels blogs you will see there are some consistent professions and others depending on the type of systems and practice in that jurisdiction. The main professions BDA provides awareness and training information include:

- eye assessors: mainly low vision optometry who are the primary eye assessor group to do the clinical and functional assessment.

- orientation and mobility specialists: who teach visual scanning, use of the biopitc and on-foot training.

- driver training: that includes the occupational therapy driving instructor.

The PwC report 'Introducing an Australian Bioptic Driving Framework' describes how the transdisciplinary team works together to support a person from initial query through to licensure or exit of a bioptic driving program. These two pages from the report illustrates (see page Australian Framework for a text version of the report including these pages being p35 & 36). The same team has the capability to also facilitate people transitioning from driving and those not a bioptic driving candidate by training in visual techniques and technology use for active travel and independent travel.

About Dr Greene Henry Greene, OD, FAAO, is a graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.
